Standard Environment (Example)

Score the potential severity of the Impact(s)

SCALE & SPREAD

Estimate how far the pollution or impact might spread in the event of an accident or incident. For example ozone depletion or emissions of greenhouse gases would have a global effect and a minor spill would be confined to the on-site environment; odours may be confined to the local vicinity of the site; transport activities or waste may be regional, national or international.

VOLUMES OF POLLUTANTS

Estimate the volumes of pollutants involved - quantify this in the justification/comments.

DURATION OF IMPACT

Estimate how long the impact might last - for example ozone depletion or emissions of greenhouse gases would have a long term effect and a minor spill of oil short term.

TOXICITY OF POLLUTANT

"Toxic" means "How much damage might the "pollutant" cause?" i.e. what is the extent of the potential impact on the environment that may result from an accident or incident? Consider its chemical properties (e.g. Toxic, Carcinogenic, Flammable, Corrosive, etc.), its energy or potential energy (e.g. electricity, radiation, and noise), its biological nature (e.g. sewage, genetically modified organisms) or its general nature (e.g. visual impact, nuisance value).

SENSITIVITY OF LOCATION

How close is the nearest "sensitive location" - e.g. Domestic dwelling, public recreational area, protected natural or national heritage site, water body, groundwater resource (aquifer), etc.?

REGULATORY LIMITS/GUIDELINES

Do you know if there are any Legal limits or guidelines or Company Policy associated with this hazard? Are you operating within them?

A separate pop-up window should have been displayed during the move from Step 1 to 2 which displays relevant legislation checklists based on the Aspect(s) chosen.

Score the probability that this Impact will occur

FREQUENCY OF THE ACTIVITY

How often is the activity carried out?

ABATEMENT

What measures have been put in place to prevent "pollution" in relation to this activity? E.g. Extraction scrubbers or filters, noise baffles, etc.

CONTAINMENT

What measures have been put in place to contain "pollution" in relation to this activity? E.g. Bunds for chemicals/oils, firewater retention pond, etc.

KNOWLEDGE/COMPETENCY

Have operators and any other people that may affect the impact received training?

CONTROL DOCUMENTATION

What procedures or work instructions have been put in place to control the activity?

Score the likelihood of being able to detect this Impact before it happens

MONITORING/INSPECTIONS

Do you carry out monitoring or inspections of the activity to prevent pollution?

HISTORY OF COMPLAINTS, INCIDENTS OR NEAR MISSES

Have there been any complaints, incidents or near misses involving this activity? Were any corrective actions dealt with? Are employees expressing concerns during this assessment? Have members of the public complained?

EQUIPMENT RELIABILITY & MAINTENANCE

Is the work equipment used in relation to the activity reliable, calibrated and well maintained?

MODE OF WARNING

In the event of an accident or emission would the impact be sudden or gradual? Could exposure be planned & controlled to limit its effect? (E.g. Emergency Plans)

MANAGEMENT SYSTEM AUDIT

Do you carry out management system audits in relation to this activity?
